Origins of UTM SPACE
On October 15, 1992, Malaysia’s Ministry of Education gave its approval to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) plan for establishing a new School for Professional and Further Education. This institution was designed to serve as a specialized hub for delivering lifelong learning initiatives within the university system. It officially opened its doors in July 1993, initially named the School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE).
Growth and Evolution
In 2006, SPACE underwent its first renaming, becoming SPACE UTM. The inclusion of “UTM” in the name aimed to build greater public confidence in the center’s operations and its legitimate affiliation with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Beginning in 2000, SPACE UTM experienced significant expansion, fueled by increasing public demand for its part-time academic programs and professional development courses, often developed in partnership with various corporations. The center also became a model for other higher education institutions looking to implement their own lifelong learning strategies.
